Kanawa island is a very small island located right on the border of Komodo national park. It is between the island of Sumbawa and Flores.
To reach Kanawa you have to take a flight from Lombok or Bali. You can book the flight on Lion Air. I suggest you book it in advance to get the cheapest flight.
You will arrive at Labuan Bajo, the entrance gate of Komodo national Park and Flores. Try to arrive before 12 am so you can use the free charter boat from Kanawa island. If you arrive later don’t worry you can stay on Labuan Bajo one night and enjoy the night life here. They here is an hotel with a lot of bungalows just near The kanawa office with lots of bungalows. (there are around 200 000 IDR per nights). Here you can book also a stay on Seraya island, another small island on the north but less interesting than Kanawa.
On kanawa there are three type of accomotations: The tents, the bale bale and the bungalows.
The tents are for the backpackers low on budget…I guess it is not very comfy and you don’t have a lot of space to unpack your bag.
The bale bale are for me the best options. They are cheap (250 000 IDR) and located right on the beach, so at night you will have a fresh breeze from the ocean. Plus you will wake up with a wonderfull ocean view…priceless. Don’t forget that if you take the padi courses you have 5 nights free in a bale bale.
The bungalows are more expensive 390 000 IDR per night. But for that price you have your own bathroom
I found the food very good on Kanawa. Everything is home-made, including the bread which is delicious. The food is more expensive than on the main land but consider they have to bring food and water by boat every day from the mainland.
In the evening there is a bar on the beach where you can drink some Bintang. A really cool place to meet some people especially if you are a diver
We have been twice to Gili trawangan: One first time in 2012 and then in 2013.
Gili trawangan is mainly known for its parties. There is a main street which goes alon the beach with plenty of restaurants and bars. Just near you can also find Gili Meno and Gili air which are two other islands but more quiet than Trawangan.
To reach Trawangan from Bali you need to take the speedboat from Padangbai. It costs 600 000 IDR for a round trip.
From Lombok you just have to go to Bangsal (from sengiggi it costs you around 90 000 IDR) wich is the public harbour. Then go to the ticket office, buy a ticket (If I remember well it’s 25 000 IDR per person or even less) and go on the boat. when ther will be enough people on the boat you’ll leave. You need around 45 min to reach the island depending on the power of your boat.
On our trip of 2013 we have been surprised on how many new hotels, guest houses and restaurants have been opened for one year. So you don’t need to book in advance you’ll surely find something that match your expectations.
When you arrive on the beach by boat you can either go on the right or on the left. If you are looking for something very comfortable I suggest you go on the right and walk a bit until you find the accomodation you need. Be carefull to the mosquee…Don’t book a bungalow near it as you’ll be waken up each day at 4am…up to you…
If you go on the left just walk until the little square (market square) and then turn right and go in the village. There there are a lot of accomodations without the sea view but very comfortable and clean. Just try one and if you don’t like it, try the next one. It is cheap (around 150 000 to 200 000 per night) and It has the advantage to be very close to the market. every evening there is a food market on the little square i mentionned earlier and you can eat there some indonesian food, fresh sea food for very good prices. Very convenient also if you want to meet some people.
This was the first Bungalow we rent for 500 000 IDR per night. As you can see very close to the beach but also very clos to the Mosquee
Beautifull sunset on the north of the island with the Agung visible
Crystal clear water
Nusa Lembongan is a small island in the south of Bali. As soon as we landed in Denpasar we took a cab to go directly to Sanur. From there you can take a speed boat to go to Nusa Lembongan. There is a departure every hour and it costs 300 000 IDR per person for a round trip.
The trip lengh is about 45 minutes but it’s quite shaky…
The boat dropped us at mushrooom bay. As we didn’t have booked anything before we arrive, it was time for the visit. It is much better this way as you can see from your eyes what you pay for and you can also negotiate. If you are a couple, one of you can wait on the beach with the bags while the other is going visiting the accomodations… So after few visits we decided to book a bungalow really close to the sea for 500 000 IDR per night. As usual in Indonesia, breakfast is included in the price. There was a nice swimming pool with a view on the bay. But this price is quite expensive in Indonesia. We had the impression that everything was a bit overpriced in Nusa Lembongan even if it stays very affordable.
The next day we decided to rent a motorbike to dicover the island. We wanted to go on Nusa Ceningan which is the island close to Nusa Lembongan and accessible from a narrow suspended bridge
Restaurant with nice view close to coconut beach
On Nusa Ceningan there is a jumping point. After the suspended Bridge, turn on your right and you will see the indications leading to the jumping point. If my memory is good you have to pay a fee of 5000 or 10000 IDR to enter the site. There is a bar at the jumping point and you have to pay if you want to jump. 50000 IDR for 2 jumps from the 13 meters plot.
